Aitana Bonmatí Suffers Leg Fracture, Misses Nations League Final

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Aitana Bonmatí, 27, has sustained a fracture in her left fibula during a training session with the Spanish national team, the Spanish Football Federation announced Sunday. The injury forces the reigning Ballon d’Or winner to withdraw from Spain’s Nations League final against Germany on Tuesday.

The fracture casts doubt on Bonmatí’s availability for Barcelona and the Spanish national team in the coming months. A three-time ballon d’Or recipient (2023, 2024, and 2025), Bonmatí is a pivotal player for both club and country. Recovery timelines range from 4-6 weeks for a minor fracture to 3-6 months if surgery is required, according to Marca.

The injury occurred when Bonmatí “finished the morning session at Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas in pain after a bad step down in a temporary situation,” the Spanish federation stated. Examinations confirmed the fracture of the left fibula (peroneus).

Bonmatí will return to barcelona for further evaluation and to determine the full extent of the injury. Spain and Germany played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the Nations League final.
