Apple is prioritizing AirPods adn speakers over a major update to teh AirPods Max, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.The high-end headphones, while still selling, aren’t generating enough volume to justify important new engineering investment, Gurman reports in his Power On newsletter.
But the reality is that the headphones are in an odd spot commercially. They’re too popular for Apple to stop selling them, and they’re not popular enough for the company to invest a ton of time and money into creating a new version. Apple only rolled out the USB-C model last year due to EU requirements.
The company’s audio team will instead focus on developing new AirPods earbuds and investing in speakers for other apple products. This explains why the AirPods Max have seen limited changes since their initial release five years ago, with the recent shift to USB-C being driven by European Union regulations.The USB-C upgrade was implemented to comply with the EU’s mandate for common charging standards.
Gurman suggests that fans hoping for a significant redesign or feature upgrade to the AirPods Max will ”probably have to keep waiting.”
Currently, the AirPods Max are available on Amazon for $519. for consumers seeking a more affordable over-ear option with Apple features,the Beats Studio Pro are available for $179. The Beats Studio Pro offer a lighter design while maintaining key Apple ecosystem integration.
Apple currently has no plans for a entirely new AirPods Max model.
