AirPods Firmware Update 8B39 Released for Pro 2, Pro 3 & AirPods 4
Apple released firmware update 8B39 today for the AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods 4, according to multiple reports. The update, which began rolling out Tuesday, follows previous firmware versions 8B34 for the AirPods Pro 3, 8B28 for the AirPods Pro 2, and 8B21 for the AirPods 4.
Although Apple has not publicly detailed the changes included in the 8B39 update, the company’s support documentation indicates that firmware updates typically deliver bug fixes and performance improvements. The release comes shortly after Apple unveiled the iOS 26.4 update, alongside new hardware including the iPhone 17e, iPad Air models with the M4 chip, and the AirPods Max 2, according to MacRumors.
Users can update their AirPods firmware by ensuring their devices – iPhone, iPad, or Mac – are connected to Wi-Fi and within Bluetooth range of the AirPods. The AirPods must be placed in their charging case, which is then connected to a power source. The update process can take at least 30 minutes to complete with the charging case closed, as outlined in Apple’s support materials.
The timing of the 8B39 release may be linked to the recent launch of the AirPods Max 2, as Apple noted that certain features of the new headphones would require iOS 26.4 and the latest AirPods firmware, 9to5Mac reported. Though, Apple has not confirmed any specific compatibility enhancements with the new headphones.
Apple’s firmware updates are delivered automatically and do not require manual intervention from users. Those without access to an Apple device can schedule an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update their AirPods firmware, according to Apple’s support website.
