AI Glasses Restore Independence for Dementia Patients | NHS to Offer New Tech

March 23, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

London, UK – A London-based technology firm, CrossSense, has been awarded a £1 million grant to accelerate the rollout of artificial intelligence-powered smart glasses designed to aid individuals in the early stages of dementia. The technology, developed over a decade, aims to restore a degree of independence to those experiencing cognitive decline by providing real-time visual and auditory guidance.

The funding, provided jointly by the Alzheimer’s Society and Innovate UK, will be used to expedite research and prepare the glasses for wider availability through the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, with initial trials already demonstrating positive results within patients’ homes. The glasses have received praise from medical review committees, according to a statement released by CrossSense.

The smart glasses, weighing just 75 grams, are designed for comfort and compatibility with existing assistive devices. They are engineered to work seamlessly with both prescription lenses and hearing aids. A built-in battery provides up to one hour of continuous use, with the option to connect to a portable power bank for extended operation.

Central to the functionality of the glasses is an AI assistant named “Wisbi.” Wisbi learns the user’s routines and adapts to their changing needs, offering assistance with everyday tasks. The system utilizes integrated cameras to identify objects in the user’s environment, verbally naming them to aid recognition. It also provides step-by-step instructions for activities like preparing food or navigating familiar spaces.

“As dementia progresses, the world shrinks for patients, but these innovations give us real hope in maintaining independence,” stated a representative from CrossSense.

Early trial results indicate a significant improvement in quality of life for 75% of users, suggesting the potential for the glasses to turn into a key component of dementia care plans within memory clinics and by local authorities and care providers. The technology is specifically targeted at individuals in the early stages of the condition, offering support as they navigate daily challenges.

CrossSense anticipates a broader launch of the product in early 2026, pending final approvals and integration within the NHS framework. The company plans to work closely with local authorities, care providers and memory clinics to facilitate adoption and ensure accessibility for those who could benefit from the technology.
