Navigating the student housing market can be a daunting task, frequently enough filled with stress and competition. Daniel Virin, a 22-year-old student at the University of Bristol, experienced these challenges firsthand and decided to create a solution. In 2022, he conceived Cribster, a website designed to match university flatmates using artificial intelligence (AI).

The Algorithm Behind the Idea
Cribster’s core is an algorithm that pairs like-minded users based on several factors:
- Budget
- Location preferences
- Values
- Hobbies
- Habits
The goal is to optimize the use of available housing by forming compatible groups, filling vacant rooms, and alleviating the strain on student lettings.
Student Perspectives
Shriya Pillay, another student at the University of Bristol, emphasized the pressure students face to secure housing early in their academic careers. I remember starting to look for housing and flatmates just a couple of months into my first year at university,
she said.

Success Stories
Jovan Navjee found success using Cribster, forming genuine and lasting friendships
with three individuals suggested by the AI. He noted, Since moving in we’ve really clicked, and having the right flatmates has made a huge difference in my overall university experience.

Funding and Growth
Mr. Virin’s project recently received £4,500 from the University of Bristol through the Jim and Peggy Wilkinson Awards and the Development Stage competition. He is now developing a Cribster app with his twin brother, an engineer.

Mark Neild,an associate professor in innovation and entrepreneurship, stated that Mr. virin made a compelling case
for Cribster’s value and necessity. Mr. Virin also received an Outstanding Plus Award in 2024 for tackling a critical element of student wellbeing.
