AI Cow Collars: Startup Halter Valued Over $2 Billion & Agtech Stocks to Watch

March 22, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

New Zealand-based agricultural technology firm Halter has secured a funding round led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, valuing the company at over $2 billion, according to disclosures made on March 20 and 22, 2026.

The investment marks a significant milestone for Halter, which manufactures AI-powered collars designed to autonomously manage cattle movement, and behaviour. The deal is reportedly oversubscribed, indicating strong investor demand, though the precise amount of funding remains undisclosed. Halter currently operates across more than 5,000 farms globally.

Halter’s technology utilizes GPS positioning, audio cues, and mild electrical pulses to guide cattle, effectively replacing traditional fencing. The collars learn individual animal behaviour patterns through machine learning algorithms, enabling farmers to remotely manage grazing, track health metrics, and optimize pasture utilization via a smartphone application. The company charges farmers between $5 and $8 per animal per month for the service.

The valuation reflects growing investor confidence in agricultural AI, a sector that has historically faced challenges in attracting capital compared to enterprise software or consumer technology. Founders Fund’s investment positions Halter as a rare “agritech unicorn,” a privately held startup valued at over $1 billion.

Halter’s founder, Craig Piggott, told Bloomberg in 2024 that the goal was “to make pasture farming more sustainable and productive using technology.” The company’s momentum is particularly notable given recent headwinds in the agtech sector, where a number of startups have declared bankruptcy and venture capital firms have largely pulled back from the space.

The broader precision agriculture market, but, remains robust. Industry estimates place the global market at roughly $9.5 billion in 2025, with projections exceeding $17 billion by 2031. More efficient farming practices could potentially contribute to more stable food prices, though the extent of this impact is still being evaluated.

Several publicly traded companies are already involved in the precision agriculture space. Deere &amp. Co. (NYSE: DE) has a dedicated Production and Precision Agriculture business segment, including its Observe & Spray technology, which uses AI to reduce herbicide use. Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK), through its Allflex and SenseHub divisions, monitors over 2 million dairy cows globally and sells over 500 million animal identification tags annually. AGCO Corp. (NYSE: AGCO) manufactures farm equipment and owns Precision Planting, whereas CNH Industrial (NYSE: CNH) invests in digital farming tools through its Case IH and New Holland brands. Corteva (NYSE: CTVA) focuses on crop protection and precision application technologies.

Halter’s last funding round, in June 2025, raised $100 million at a $1 billion valuation, led by BOND. Since then, the company has established a Colorado office and is prioritizing expansion within the United States.
