Cologne Film Festival Faces Funding cuts Despite Recent Award
COLOGNE, GERMANY - The Africa Film Festival Cologne (AFFC), lauded as “the largest stage for African cinema in Germany” and recently named “Cultural event of 2024,” is facing a critical funding shortfall, threatening its 2025 iteration from September 18-28. Dramatic cuts to the cultural budget are jeopardizing the festival’s future, according to organizers.
The festival focuses on bringing African stories to German audiences, and actively engages youth through free screenings – such as “Supa Modo” - and school workshops, fostering intercultural understanding. Adult film enthusiasts participate in workshops and panel discussions. A key event is the audience-voted “Best feature film” award, sponsored by Choices.
Festival founder Mosese describes cinema as a “fragile altar,” emphasizing the importance of securing its continuation.
Donations are being sought to support the festival. Further information can be found at https://www.afrikafilmfestivalkoeln.de/start.
