Judge Hit in Face During Yankees’ Loss to Mets
All-Star slugger shrugs off teammate’s errant toss after another defeat.
A bizarre incident compounded the New York Yankees’ woes as Aaron Judge was struck in the face by a ball thrown by teammate Anthony Volpe following the fifth inning of their 12-6 loss to the New York Mets on Saturday.
Infield Mishap
After the fifth inning concluded with Mark Vientos lining out, the Yankees began the customary ball toss as they headed toward the dugout. Volpe’s throw inadvertently hit Judge, who appeared to be looking elsewhere, knocking off his sunglasses. Judge remained in the game, sporting a bandage near his eye. Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed initial concern, “I didn’t know what happened initially. I just saw kind of a — what felt like something happened, so yeah, of course I was concerned. [Judge] had a little cut. In the end, I don’t think anything too serious, obviously. But yeah, initially, obviously very concerned.”
Yankees’ Struggles Continue
The Yankees’ loss marked their sixth consecutive defeat, mirroring a season-worst slump. According to MLB.com, the Yankees have struggled with runners in scoring position during this losing streak, batting just .180 MLB.com.
“It’s been a terrible week,”
Boone lamented.
Judge’s Perspective
Adding insult to injury, the team’s struggles have reached a level not seen in decades. New York had not endured two six-game losing streaks in a single year since 2000. Yet team captain Judge remains optimistic.
“Just got to play better,”
said Judge. “That’s what it comes down to. Just fundamentals. Making the routine play routine. It’s just the little things. That’s what it kind of comes down to — but every good team goes through a couple bumps in the road.”
“We’ll clean some things up. We know what we need to do. We’ll take care of business.”
