Aakash Chopra Corrects Shehbaz Sharif Over Pakistan’s UAE Loss
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif faced a public correction on social media after congratulating his national cricket team for a victory over India at the 2026 Hong Kong Sixes tournament, with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra pointing out that Pakistan had actually lost its opening match to the United Arab Emirates. Aakash Chopra noted that the Prime Minister’s public praise overlooked the team’s earlier tournament defeat.
Sharif Praises Pakistan Victory over India
The controversy began when Pakistan beat India by four wickets during the six-a-side tournament on Friday, where each team bats for six overs. Following the win, Sharif posted a message on X praising the players and team management.
Congratulations to our boys on a superb four-wicket victory over India in the opening clash of the Hong Kong Sixes 2026! It was a good game of cricket. I also commend Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi and his team for their dedicated efforts in preparing and supporting
Shortly after the post went live, Chopra responded on X with a sarcastic critique of the Prime Minister’s statement. Chopra highlighted the tournament’s actual timeline and questioned the broader state of the sport in Pakistan.
Humne Bharat Ko Hara Diya bolne ki itni jaldi hai ki fact-check bhi nahin kiya. UAE se haare in the opening game. And also, you can gauge the quality of cricket Pakistan is playing that country’s PM is tweeting about Hong Kong Sixes. I mean. Really!!!
Pakistan Chases 89 Runs to Beat India
The specific fixture that drew Sharif’s praise saw Pakistan captain Abbas Afridi win the toss and elect to bowl first. India managed a total of 88 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted six overs, driven by Shashank Singh who scored 40 runs off 11 balls.
Pakistan chased down the target of 89 runs in just 3.5 overs to secure the four-wicket win. Khawaja Nafay led the scoring for Pakistan with 41 runs off 12 deliveries, while captain Abbas Afridi contributed 35 runs off eight balls. Despite this performance against India, the earlier loss to the UAE remained unmentioned in the official government congratulation, prompting Chopra’s public correction regarding the tournament standings.
