Chicago Marathon Runner‌ Completes Race Months After⁤ Stage IV Lung Cancer Diagnosis

CHICAGO – ⁤ Kevin Humphrey of Chicago completed the Chicago Marathon on​ November 5, 2025, just months after‍ receiving a Stage IV ​lung cancer diagnosis. The⁢ 40-year-old father of two ran the 26.2-mile ​race​ with his sons cheering him on,a ⁣testament⁢ to his⁢ resilience​ and determination​ in the face of ⁣a life-altering illness.

Humphrey initially dismissed​ a persistent⁣ cough as a⁣ minor annoyance, but further investigation revealed a far more serious condition. Diagnosed with Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer in ⁢April 2025, Humphrey underwent aggressive treatment while simultaneously training for the marathon.‌ His story highlights the frequently ⁣enough-subtle initial symptoms of lung cancer and the ​importance of early detection, ​even in non-smokers. Lung cancer remains⁢ the leading cause of​ cancer death ⁤in both men⁣ and women in the United ⁣States, according to ⁢the⁣ American​ Cancer Society, with a‍ five-year survival rate ⁣of only 25% ⁤when diagnosed at stage IV.⁢

“It ⁤was a really scary time,”⁤ Humphrey‌ shared with CBS ⁢News. “but I⁣ knew I needed‌ to ​stay positive, not just ⁣for myself, but​ for my boys.” He continued ‌training ‌throughout chemotherapy, adjusting his ‍workouts as needed and leaning on the‌ support of his family and friends.

Humphrey finished ‍the ‌marathon⁤ in 5‌ hours and 38 minutes, a ⁣personal achievement made all the ⁣more meaningful by⁤ his health battle.
