Game of Thrones is famous for its shocking and graphic scenes.

But HBO’s new prequel series,A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, began with a surprising moment.

A few minutes into the season premiere, Ser Duncan (Peter Claffey) is mourning the death of his lord and mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb). Though poor and new to knighthood, Duncan enters a jousting tournament. As he decides, the show plays HBO’s famous Game of Thrones theme song. Right as the music swells, the scene cuts to Duncan unexpectedly and graphically defecating.

Even co-creator George R.R. martin was surprised. “Yeah, that was a bit of a surprise,” the author told The Hollywood Reporter during interviews for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
