PlayStation PC Launcher Rumour Debunked: No More PS5 Ports?

Reports circulating online this week suggesting Sony is developing a dedicated PC launcher for PlayStation titles are being downplayed by industry insiders, despite a surge of online speculation. The claims, which originated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), posited that a proprietary launcher would allow Sony to retain 100% of revenue from PC game sales and potentially block titles from running on Microsoft’s forthcoming Project Helix hybrid console.

The speculation gained traction with the suggestion that Marvel’s Wolverine, an upcoming PlayStation exclusive, would be a launch title for the alleged platform. However, these claims are increasingly viewed with skepticism following comments from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier.

Schreier, a highly respected voice in the gaming industry, addressed the rumours on the ResetEra forum, stating that Sony is likely to formally confirm its shift away from PC ports in the near future. “At some point Sony will confirm [it’s no longer releasing PC ports], whether it’s on a call with investors or maybe even when Housemarque starts doing press for Saros and someone asks if they have plans to bring it to PC and they say no,” Schreier wrote.

This assessment aligns with recent reports indicating a strategic reversal by Sony regarding PC game releases. Bloomberg reported earlier this month that plans to port titles like Ghost of Yōtei and Saros to PC have been scrapped due to underwhelming sales performance of PlayStation exclusives on the platform. This follows a trend of lower-than-expected revenue from PC versions of previously console-exclusive titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War.

The potential shift in strategy represents a significant departure from Sony’s recent efforts to expand its reach beyond the PlayStation ecosystem. In 2022, the company began releasing key PlayStation titles on Steam, linking purchases to PlayStation Network accounts. PlayStation encourages users to link their Steam accounts to their PlayStation accounts to receive unlocks and updates, according to the company’s PC registration page.

However, the success of live-service games like Helldivers 2, which has seen considerable success on Steam, appears to be an exception to the broader trend. Sony will continue to support multiplatform releases for live-service titles, but single-player action-adventure games, traditionally PlayStation’s core offering, are expected to return to console exclusivity. PlayStation Studios is described on Steam as being “home to the development of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s own outstanding and immersive games.”

As of today, Sony has not issued an official statement regarding its future PC porting strategy, nor has it commented on the possibility of a dedicated PC launcher. Housemarque, the developer of Saros, has not yet announced any plans for a PC release.
