OLED Burn-In Protection: 5 Monitor Brands With Warranties & Features

OLED Monitor Burn-In Protection Now Standard From Major Brands

As OLED monitor technology gains popularity for its superior picture quality and gaming performance, manufacturers are increasingly addressing consumer concerns about potential burn-in. Several leading brands now offer built-in software features and explicit warranties to mitigate the risk of permanent image retention, a common worry associated with the technology.

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays are renowned for their deeper blacks, vibrant colors, and high contrast ratios, often surpassing traditional IPS (In-Plane Switching) panels. Their near-instantaneous response times also develop them a favorite among gamers. However, OLEDs are susceptible to burn-in – a phenomenon where static images displayed for extended periods can abandon a persistent ghost image on the screen. While advancements have reduced the likelihood and speed of burn-in, the risk remains a consideration for potential buyers.

LG, a dominant player in the OLED display market, has integrated several preventative features into its monitors. These include OLED Screen Move, which subtly shifts the image; OLED Screen Saver, which activates after a period of inactivity; and OLED Image Cleaning, which periodically refreshes the pixels. In August 2023, LG further solidified its commitment to customer peace of mind by adding a burn-in warranty to its OLED monitor lineup. The warranty, valid for two years from the purchase date, covers burn-in resulting from “normal and proper apply” in a residential setting for personal use – gaming or professional work. Commercial applications, such as using the monitor as a retail display, are specifically excluded from the warranty terms, as LG communicated to The Verge at the time of the announcement.

Following LG’s lead, Asus also introduced a burn-in warranty for its OLED monitors in 2024. While some Asus models, including the PQ22UC, MQ13AH, MQ16AH, and PA27DCE, are covered by a two-year warranty, others benefit from a three-year warranty. Asus goes beyond warranty coverage with its OLED Care Pro technology, which includes settings to automatically dim the display when no movement is detected. Select high-finish Asus gaming monitors also feature custom heatsinks designed to actively protect against burn-in, and a neo proximity sensor that turns the display black when the user steps away.

MSI offers its own software solution, MSI OLED Care, accessible through the MSI Gaming Intelligence app or the monitor’s on-screen display. This suite includes Pixel Shift, which subtly moves pixels to prevent static image retention; Panel Protect, which prompts or forces pixel refresh cycles; and Static Screen Detection, which automatically reduces brightness when static elements like taskbars or logos are consistently displayed. MSI further backs its OLED monitors with a three-year burn-in warranty.

Dell, through its Alienware sub-brand and other monitor lines, also provides burn-in protection. Alienware OLED monitors feature Pixel Refresh functionality that automatically activates after four hours of use, or can be initiated manually through the monitor’s OSD. Dell offers a three-year burn-in warranty on all its OLED monitors, regardless of whether they are sold under the Alienware brand.

Corsair’s approach combines software and warranty coverage. Its Orbit feature subtly shifts displayed content by one pixel per minute to prevent static image retention, while Image Retention Refresh runs automatically after eight hours of use. Corsair offers a three-year burn-in warranty, contingent on utilizing the Orbit and Image Retention Refresh features. Corsair also provides a three-year “zero dead pixel warranty,” guaranteeing replacement in the event of dead pixels.

These manufacturers are responding to a key consumer concern, making OLED monitors a more attractive option for those hesitant about potential burn-in. While the risk remains, the combination of preventative software features and warranty coverage offers increased assurance for buyers.
