A late goal in the 100th minute by Joel Ordóñez secured a 2-1 victory for Club Brugge over Sporting Charleroi on Sunday, a result overshadowed by a dangerous tackle by Charleroi defender Kevin Van Den Kerkhof on Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis during the Jupiler Pro League match.
The incident occurred around the 61st minute, prompting immediate action from referee Verbeke, who issued a straight red card to Van Den Kerkhof for the two-footed challenge. Tzolis initially required medical attention on the pitch but was able to continue playing.
Following the match, Club Brugge’s team manager shared a photograph on social media revealing a significant gash on Tzolis’s leg as a result of the tackle. Despite the injury, Tzolis appeared in good spirits in the photo, posing with a smile.
Club Brugge initially fell behind after Cheick Keita scored for Charleroi in the 35th minute. Tzolis equalized for the visitors in the 74th minute, converting a penalty. The match appeared headed for a draw until Ordóñez’s dramatic winner deep into added time.
The match also saw a flurry of yellow cards issued, with Carlos Forbes, Mohamed Koné, Lewin Blum, and Aurélien Scheidler all cautioned. The late goal sparked celebrations for Club Brugge, while Charleroi coach Cornelis protested the amount of added time granted by the referee.
Christos Tzolis, a 24-year-old Greek winger, joined Club Brugge in July 2024 and has a contract with the club through June 2029. His market value is currently estimated at €30.00 million.
The disciplinary committee is expected to review the incident involving Van Den Kerkhof, with reports indicating the public prosecutor’s office is seeking a four-match suspension for the Charleroi player.
