Tottenham Hotspur have issued indefinite bans to three supporters following an investigation into Nazi salutes performed during a Champions League match against Eintracht Frankfurt in January. The club confirmed the sanctions on Monday, coinciding with a €30,000 fine levied against them by UEFA.
The incidents occurred during Tottenham’s 2-0 victory at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on January 28th. UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body determined the actions constituted “racist and/or discriminatory behaviour” and imposed a suspended ban on the club selling away tickets for one future UEFA competition match. The suspended ban is probationary for one year, meaning Tottenham will be permitted to sell away tickets for their upcoming Champions League last-16 first leg against Atletico Madrid.
“We can confirm that all three individuals found to be making Nazi salutes towards Eintracht Frankfurt fans have been identified and have received indefinite bans under the club’s sanctions and banning policy,” Tottenham stated. “The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and has therefore taken the strongest possible action. The disgusting behaviour of a minority of so-called fans on the night is in no way reflective of the values of our club and its supporters.”
In addition to the fine related to the discriminatory behaviour, Tottenham were similarly fined a further €2,250 for the throwing of objects by supporters during the same match. UEFA’s decision follows a cooperative investigation involving Tottenham, German police, and the Metropolitan Police in London.
The sanctions arrive amid increased scrutiny of fan behaviour at football matches across Europe. Last week, Real Madrid launched its own investigation into an alleged Nazi salute performed by a supporter before their Champions League match against Benfica, according to reports.
Tottenham’s response included full cooperation with UEFA’s investigation and the sharing of evidence with both German and British law enforcement. The club’s statement emphasized its commitment to combating discrimination and upholding its values.
