Hezbollah launched a barrage of missiles and drones at a military base in northern Israel early Monday, escalating tensions following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and subsequent strikes by Israel and the United States against Iranian targets. The attack, described by Hezbollah as retaliation for Khamenei’s death, prompted a swift response from Israel, with dozens of strikes reported against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, according to multiple reports.
The escalation marks a significant widening of the conflict, which began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes inside Iran. Iranian officials have vowed to retaliate for those strikes, which reportedly killed over 550 people, according to Iran’s Red Crescent. Tehran has already launched attacks against Israel and targets across the Middle East, resulting in the deaths of four U.S. Service members and eleven Israelis, according to reports from NBC News and the Associated Press.
The conflict has also seen unintended consequences, with three U.S. Fighter jets mistakenly downed by Kuwait, resulting in further casualties. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated Monday that the war in Iran will not be “endless” and that the U.S. Goal was not regime change. However, Iran’s top national security official, Ali Larijani, rejected any possibility of negotiations with the United States, despite President Donald Trump’s assertion that Iranian officials were open to talks. Larijani vowed, “we will not negotiate with the United States,” as the conflict intensified.
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned Hezbollah’s actions as “an irresponsible and suspicious act,” and banned the group’s military activities. However, Hezbollah’s attack follows months of increasing Israeli strikes within Lebanon, accusing the group of rearming and rebuilding its forces following a 2024 ceasefire agreement. Israel reportedly killed Hezbollah’s Chief of Staff, Haytham Ali Tabatabai, in November, but Monday’s attack represents a significant escalation in the intensity of the conflict.
The United States is reportedly sending additional troops to the Middle East, though details remain limited. Israel continues to conduct strikes in Lebanon, and Iran has maintained its stance against negotiations, leaving the region poised for further escalation.
