Brain Over Body: How Stress Impacts Weight & Sustainable Weight Loss | Daniela Kielkowski

Berlin – German nutritional medicine specialist Daniela Kielkowski argues that the brain, not food, dictates weight, according to her latest book, “Der stille Dickmacher” (The Silent Fat Maker). Published this month by Becker Joest Volk Verlag, the book details how the brain processes nutrients – utilizing them for energy, converting them to heat, or storing them as fat – and how chronic stress can disrupt this process.

Kielkowski contends that traditional diets often fail because they don’t address the underlying neurological factors influencing metabolism. She posits that reducing the cortisol level is key to achieving sustainable weight loss. The book, 192 pages in length and priced at 26 Euros, offers scientifically-backed strategies for managing stress and reactivating metabolism, aiming for a 30-day reset.

According to Kielkowski, the brain determines how absorbed nutrients are processed. This process can be influenced by stress reduction, allowing the brain to shift into an active and relaxed metabolic state.

Daniela Kielkowski, born January 4, 1972, in Berlin, trained as a nurse before studying medicine at the Free University of Berlin and Charité. She specialized in preventative and nutritional medicine, and similarly gained qualifications in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Since 2006, she has operated a private practice in Berlin focusing on nutritional therapy and metabolic analysis.

Kielkowski frequently appears in German media as a nutrition expert, including on ARD’s “Brisant,” WDR’s “Aktuelle Stunde,” ZDF with Sebastian Lege, RBB, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, and Sat.1’s “Frühstücksfernsehen.” She also hosts a daily segment answering listener questions on Schlager Radio and appears regularly on T-Online.

“Der stille Dickmacher,” co-authored with Thorsten Dagatz, is Kielkowski’s latest publication with Becker Joest Volk Verlag. She previously published “Die Stoffwechsel-Revolution – Abnehmen mit Kohlenhydraten” (The Metabolism Revolution – Losing Weight with Carbohydrates) in 2024.
