Microsoft Teams & Cancer Research: Insights from ACS & German Cancer Aid

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is leveraging Microsoft Azure DevOps to streamline operations and reduce costs, a partnership highlighted in a recent case study. The collaboration aims to improve connectivity for the organization’s extensive volunteer network and enhance the functionality of its mobile applications.

According to Microsoft, the ACS sought a solution to improve collaboration, accelerate development cycles, and address high database costs. The organization’s IT team implemented Azure DevOps, integrating it with open-source technologies like .NET Core. This strategic move is intended to support the ACS’s mission of connecting volunteers and saving lives from cancer.

The ACS as well utilizes Microsoft Teams for internal communication and collaboration, extending its reach to virtual events and meetings. Resources are available, including virtual backgrounds featuring the ACS logo, for use in Teams and Zoom, supporting initiatives like Pride Month and Relay For Life. Specific backgrounds are available for the 2023 Relay For Life campaign, as well as those promoting the “Gold Together” initiative.

Beyond volunteer coordination, the ACS is exploring the use of Teams for more complex medical applications. Microsoft documentation details the potential for virtual tumor boards, utilizing Teams as a central hub for secure access to patient medical history, diagnostics, and care team discussions. This application focuses on data integration and accessibility, allowing for quick reference and archiving of critical patient information.

Ben Kaplan, Senior Director of Digital Products at the American Cancer Society, is cited in connection with the Azure DevOps implementation. The case study details the organization’s success in utilizing Microsoft Azure to address key challenges, though specific details regarding cost reductions or volunteer engagement metrics were not immediately available.
