A 54-year-old man is recovering in a Sydney hospital after being allegedly attacked with machetes by two teenagers at Bondi Beach on Friday night. The incident occurred on Glasgow Avenue around 9:15 p.m., leaving the man with a serious knife wound to his upper body, according to Novel South Wales Police.
Police allege the man was initially involved in an altercation with the two boys before being stabbed. Following the attack, the two suspects, aged 15 and 17, were apprehended on Beach Road and taken to Surry Hills Police Station. Both teenagers were subsequently refused bail and faced court on Saturday.
The 15-year-old boy has been charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others, possess or employ a prohibited weapon without permit, common assault, stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm, two counts of supply prohibited drug, deal with property proceeds of crime, goods suspected stolen in/on premises and breach of bail. The 17-year-old boy faces charges of wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others, possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit and breach of bail.
Authorities stated the attack followed an argument between the man and one of the teenagers regarding an e-bike. According to police, the initial assailant fled the scene before returning with the second teenager to allegedly assault the man a second time.
The victim received treatment from NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene before being transported to St Vincent Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition. A crime scene has been established, and investigations are ongoing.
This incident adds to a series of recent tragic events in the Sydney area. In December, a mass shooting at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration resulted in 16 deaths and over 40 injuries. More recently, Sydney has experienced a series of shark attacks, including four incidents within 48 hours, resulting in one fatality and serious injuries to a surfer.
