Wataru Endo, Liverpool’s Japanese midfielder, underwent ankle surgery in Japan, potentially jeopardizing his participation in both the remainder of Liverpool’s season and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The injury occurred during Liverpool’s 1-0 victory against Sunderland on February 11th, forcing Endo off the pitch and prompting further assessment.
Japan’s national team manager, Hajime Moriyasu, confirmed the surgery in comments reported by Nikkan Sports. “I’ve heard that he had surgery,” Moriyasu stated. “I’ve heard that it went well, but I don’t know the details of how it went.” Moriyasu emphasized a shared objective between the club and national team: “The plan is for him to be ready in time for the World Cup, so the rehabilitation process from surgery onwards is being considered. In order to play in the World Cup, he, the club, and we all share the same understanding.”
The World Cup, scheduled to begin on June 11th across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, presents a tight timeframe for Endo’s recovery. At 33 years old, this tournament holds significant importance for the experienced midfielder, who has increasingly become a key figure within the Japan squad. Japan is scheduled to play friendlies against Scotland and England as part of their preparations, but Endo will be absent for those matches.
Liverpool has yet to release an official medical update regarding Endo’s surgery and expected recovery period. However, sources indicate that the club anticipates he will miss the remainder of the domestic season to prioritize rehabilitation. Endo has featured in 12 matches this campaign, making three starts and accumulating 455 minutes of playing time.
Endo joined Liverpool last season and quickly established himself as a valuable squad member, often deployed as a substitute to solidify leads. He has appeared 25 times as a substitute in 32 total outings for the club. His current contract is set to expire this summer, adding another layer of complexity to his situation as the club assesses its midfield options.
The injury comes at a critical juncture for both player and club. Liverpool will need to navigate the closing months of the season without one of their experienced midfield operators, even as Japan must prepare for their World Cup campaign in Group F, which includes the Netherlands, Tunisia, and a yet-to-be-determined opponent from a playoff group featuring Ukraine, Sweden, Poland, or Albania.
