Daylight Saving Time & Heart Health: What You Need to Know

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

The American Heart Association (AHA) is warning that the annual shift to daylight saving time, which begins on March 8th, may pose risks to cardiovascular and overall health, citing scientific research. The organization’s statement comes as many across the nation prepare to “spring forward” and adjust their clocks.

According to the AHA, the abrupt change in sleep schedule associated with daylight saving time can disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm. This disruption has been linked to a number of health concerns, including an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and irregular heartbeat.

The AHA highlights that approximately one in three adults do not get enough sleep, exacerbating the potential negative effects of the time change. The organization offers resources on improving sleep health, emphasizing the connection between adequate rest and brain function.

March is also recognized as National Nutrition Month, and the AHA is promoting healthy eating habits. The organization notes that over 50% of the average U.S. Diet consists of ultra-processed foods, and encourages individuals and families to adopt healthier eating styles. Recommendations include incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables, consuming fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and choosing unsalted nuts and seeds as snacks.

In addition to nutrition and sleep, the AHA is drawing attention to cardiovascular health for women, noting that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. They emphasize the importance of preventative measures and awareness of risk factors, even during pregnancy, recommending the application of Life’s Essential 8 for cardiovascular health throughout all stages of life.

National Snack Day is observed on March 4th, and National Dentist Day on March 6th. The AHA suggests healthy snacking options and highlights the role dentists can play in screening for broader health concerns.

Daylight saving time will commence at 2:00 AM local time on March 8, 2026, when clocks will be moved forward one hour.
