EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The Rutgers women’s tennis team experienced a split result on Friday, falling to Yale 4-2 in the morning before rebounding with a 4-0 sweep of Monmouth in the evening.
The match against Yale began with a strong showing in doubles play. Mai Nguyen and Zuzanna Frankowska of Rutgers secured a 6-0 victory over Yale’s Orly Ogilvy and Leena Friedman, ranked 11th nationally. However, Yale ultimately claimed the doubles point with wins in the remaining two matches, 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2.
In singles competition, Yale secured three wins to clinch the overall match. Karina Jumazhanova earned a point for Rutgers on court three, winning a three-set match 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Mai Nguyen likewise contributed a victory for the Scarlet Knights, defeating Orly Ogilvy 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Other singles matches saw Leena Friedman defeat Zeynep Ilker 2-6, 7-6, 4-1 (DNF), Angela Huang defeat Stella Schmitz 6-2, 6-3, Shyla Aggarwal defeat Savannah Cohen 6-1, 6-4, and Rachel Lee defeat Naomi Karki 7-5, 2-6, 6-0.
Later in the day, Rutgers dominated Monmouth, winning all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. The duo of Nguyen and Frankowska continued their success, achieving a 7-5 victory for their seventh win of the spring season. Stella Schmitz and Naomi Karki added a 6-2 win, whereas Savannah Cohen and Miranda Case completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory.
Rutgers continued its strong performance into singles play against Monmouth, winning three matches to seal the 4-0 victory. Zuzanna Frankowska won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, as did Cindy Zhou, with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Freshman Savannah Cohen also secured a point for Rutgers, winning 6-2, 6-4. Two matches were left unfinished: Stella Schmitz vs. Pavitra Parikh (6-2, 4-3 DNF) and Naomi Karki vs. Ximena Cano (6-3, 4-1 DNF), and Miranda Case vs. Emilia Julin (7-5, 3-2 DNF).
The Rutgers women’s tennis team will next travel to face Washington on Friday, March 6.
