The Wire’s Bobby J Brown Dies in Maryland Barn Fire Aged 62

Bobby J. Brown, an actor best known for his role as a police officer in the HBO drama The Wire, died on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in a barn fire at his home in Chaptico, Maryland. He was 62 years classic.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a barn fire at Brown’s residence on Roosevelt Boulevard shortly after 10:00 p.m., with reports of a person trapped inside. Firefighters from Leonardtown, Mechanicsville, and other nearby departments found Brown within the 50-by-100-foot barn, which was nearly fully engulfed in flames, and pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to a statement from the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Brown’s death was ruled an accident, resulting from “diffuse thermal injury and smoke inhalation.” The fire marshal’s office stated that Brown had entered the barn to attempt to jump-start a vehicle when the blaze ignited. His wife reportedly attempted to assist him, suffering burns to her hands while trying to reach him with a fire extinguisher after he called for one.

Brown’s daughter, Reina Samara Brown, shared a statement online expressing her devastation. “It hurts in a way that sits heavy in my chest and does not move,” she wrote. She urged others to prioritize spending time with their parents and to inquire about their well-being, even when busy. “Stay a little longer,” she implored. “Our schedules sense so important until something like this happens and you realize what actually matters.”

Before his role on The Wire, where he played a Baltimore police officer of the same name in 12 episodes across most of the show’s five seasons, Brown had a career that included appearances in television series such as Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. More recently, he appeared in the 2022 HBO miniseries We Own This City. He also directed two films, Tear the Roof Off, a documentary about Parliament-Funkadelic, and Off the Chain, a documentary about pit bulls.

Brown’s death marks the third loss for the cast of The Wire in recent months. James Ransone, who played Ziggy Sobotka, died by suicide on December 19, 2025. Isiah Whitlock Jr., known for his portrayal of Clay Davis, died eleven days later, on December 30, 2025. Other actors from the series who have previously died include Michael Kenneth Williams, Lance Reddick, and Reg E. Cathey.

Albert Bramante, Brown’s talent agent, described him as “a uniquely talented actor and a man of great character,” noting his transition from a Golden Gloves champion to a compelling screen presence. Bramante added that Brown was “a dedicated professional and a true joy to represent.”
