Apple is preparing a significant overhaul of its Mac Studio line, slated for release between March and June 2026, with the introduction of M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. The update marks a continued investment in the desktop line, which Apple now considers its flagship, according to reports from late 2025.
The forthcoming Mac Studio will likely feature a redesigned silicon architecture, offering enhanced customization options through separate CPU and GPU blocks. Current expectations point to standard RAM configurations of 36GB for the M5 Max version and 96GB for the M5 Ultra model. While the external design and port configuration are expected to remain consistent with the current generation, the internal upgrades promise substantial performance improvements.
Apple’s decision to prioritize the Mac Studio comes after a reported reassessment of the Mac Pro line. Sources indicate the company has “largely written off” further development of the Mac Pro, concentrating resources on the Mac Studio as its primary professional desktop offering.
The new Mac Studio is anticipated to build upon the foundation laid by the M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips currently powering the Mac Studio, offering increased CPU core counts, improved graphics capabilities, and faster memory bandwidth. Apple’s current Mac Studio, released in March 2025, already boasts up to a 32-core CPU and 80-core GPU in the M3 Ultra configuration, alongside up to 512GB of unified memory.
The timing of the release aligns with Apple’s typical product cycle. The company generally introduces base M-series chips in its MacBook Pro line, followed by the Max and Ultra variants in the Mac Studio several months later. The M5 chip debuted in the MacBook Pro in October 2025, suggesting a first-half 2026 release window for the updated Mac Studio.
Alongside the new Mac Studio, Apple is also expected to launch a new Studio Display monitor. Pricing for the updated Mac Studio may see an increase due to potential U.S. Tariffs. The Mac Studio was initially released in 2022 and has received two updates since then.
Apple’s current Mac Studio is powered by the M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips, offering up to 16-core CPUs, up to 40-core GPUs, and up to 128GB of unified memory. The chips also incorporate a 16-core Neural Engine for accelerated AI tasks and feature Thunderbolt 5 connectivity.
