Resident Evil Requiem: A Deep Dive into Capcom’s Latest Horror Game

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

The latest installment in Capcom’s long-running horror franchise, Resident Evil: Requiem, arrives Friday for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game introduces Grace Ashcroft, an FBI analyst thrust into a chilling investigation connected to the infamous Raccoon City incident.

Grace Ashcroft, portrayed through the voice and motion-capture perform of Angela Sant’Albano, is a technical analyst with the Federal Bureau of Investigation assigned to a series of unexplained deaths, as detailed in Capcom’s promotional materials. Her initial case, centered around incidents at the Wrenwood Hotel, quickly unravels a connection to her mother, Alyssa Ashcroft, an investigative reporter who escaped Raccoon City during its destruction approximately 30 years prior to the events of Requiem.

Alyssa Ashcroft’s history, documented in previous Resident Evil titles like Outbreak, reveals her pursuit of Umbrella Corporation’s secrets. Her daughter’s investigation into the recent murders draws the attention of Dr. Victor Gideon, a former Umbrella scientist who believes Grace holds the key to a hidden project.

Resident Evil: Requiem also features the return of Leon S. Kennedy, a mainstay of the series, voiced once again by Nick Apostolides. Kennedy, currently operating within the Division of Security Operations (DSO), a federal unit dedicated to combating bioterrorism, becomes involved in Grace’s case as the investigation deepens. Capcom has indicated that this iteration of Leon Kennedy is a direct continuation of his character arc from Resident Evil 6, carrying the weight of past failures and unresolved conflicts.

The game’s narrative places Grace Ashcroft at the center of a modern mystery, while simultaneously drawing upon the established lore of the Resident Evil universe. The storyline explores the lingering consequences of the Raccoon City disaster and the enduring “Umbrella Curse,” as described by Capcom developers.

Resident Evil: Requiem was initially revealed during Los Angeles’ Summer Game Fest in June, marking the 30th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise. Capcom has not yet commented on projected sales figures for the title.
