Ambon, Maluku – The Maluku provincial government and the Japanese Consulate General convened Wednesday to discuss expanded cooperation across key sectors, including investment, education, fisheries, agriculture, and resource management, according to a statement from the Maluku provincial government.
Maluku Deputy Governor Abdullah Vanath affirmed his administration’s commitment to attracting Japanese investment and bolstering existing business ventures, with the goal of generating employment opportunities for local residents. “We are committed to seizing this opportunity to create jobs for the people of Maluku,” Vanath stated.
Education emerged as a priority area for collaboration, with both sides endorsing partnerships between the University of Pattimura and Japanese higher education institutions to enhance human capital development within the province. Vanath too highlighted the importance of strengthening vocational training programs to facilitate employment for Maluku residents in Japan, citing a growing demand for skilled labor in the country.
The discussions extended to strengthening Maluku’s agricultural and fisheries sectors to capitalize on export opportunities. Vanath directed local government officials to assist industries in meeting international quality standards. Japanese Consul General Susumu Takonai acknowledged the significant potential of Maluku’s capture fisheries and aquaculture industries, emphasizing the role of technology transfer, workforce development, and supply chain improvements.
Takonai also expressed Japan’s interest in the sustainable management of Maluku’s mineral resources and energy sector, specifically referencing the Masela Gas Block as a strategically critical national project for Indonesia. He further indicated support for student exchange programs, scholarships, and vocational capacity building initiatives designed to equip workers with the skills required by Japanese industries.
Beyond economic and educational collaboration, Japan signaled its willingness to provide grants for the development or procurement of essential infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, ambulances, and other facilities aimed at improving the quality of life for residents of Maluku.
Abdullah Vanath was sworn in as Deputy Governor of Maluku on February 20, 2025, alongside Governor Hendrik Lewerissa, following their inauguration by President Prabowo Subianto, according to reports from Dinamika Maluku. Vanath began working from the Maluku Representative Office in Jakarta on Monday, February 24, 2025, ahead of a planned trip to Magelang for a retreat with other regional leaders.
