A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed in western Turkey early Wednesday, resulting in the death of the pilot, officials confirmed. The crash occurred near the Bursa–Izmir highway in Balıkesir province, prompting a swift response from security forces, firefighters, and medical teams.

According to a statement released by the Turkish Ministry of National Defence, radio and radar contact with the jet was lost shortly after midnight as it took off from the 9th Main Jet Base in Balıkesir. Search and rescue operations were initiated immediately, leading to the discovery of the wreckage and confirmation of the pilot’s death. The ministry described the pilot as having been “martyred.”

Videos circulating on social media depict debris scattered across the highway, with onlookers gathering near the crash site. One video, posted to X (formerly Twitter) by the account @Archer83Able, shows a fireball rising from the impact zone. Another video shows the immediate aftermath of the crash.

İsmail Ustaoğlu, the Governor of Balıkesir, stated, “One of our F-16 aircraft belonging to the squadron of the Balıkesir 9th Main Jet Base Command crashed during a mission flight around 00:50, and one of our pilots has been martyred. I pray to Allah for mercy upon our martyr and offer my condolences to his family. May our esteemed nation’s head be consoled.”

The cause of the crash remains undetermined. The Ministry of National Defence has announced the formation of an accident inquiry team to investigate the incident. The aircraft was assigned to the 9th Main Jet Base Command. Initial reports indicate the jet lost radio communication and radar tracking shortly after takeoff at 00:56 local time.

The crash caused disruption to traffic on the Istanbul–Izmir highway, as authorities secured the area to facilitate the investigation and wreckage removal. Hurriyet newspaper reported debris was scattered across a wide area.
