Bowel Cancer: New Blood Test & Breakthroughs in Treatment & Detection

James Van Der Beek, known for his role as Dawson Leery in the television series “Dawson’s Creek,” died on February 11 at the age of 48, following a battle with colorectal cancer. His death occurred shortly after the passing of actress Catherine O’Hara, 71, who died January 30 from a pulmonary embolism after privately battling the same form of cancer.

Van Der Beek publicly announced his diagnosis in November 2024, revealing he had been fighting colorectal cancer since August 2023. A statement released on his official Instagram account described his passing as peaceful and noted he faced his final days “with courage, faith, and grace.”

The deaths of Van Der Beek and O’Hara highlight a concerning trend: while the incidence of colorectal cancer is decreasing among older adults, particularly women like O’Hara, it is on the rise among younger individuals, such as Van Der Beek. According to reports, the incidence of colorectal cancer has plunged for Florida residents Catherine O’Hara’s age but it’s rising among adults James Van Der Beek’s age.

Van Der Beek had previously shared that he experienced no obvious “red flag” symptoms before his diagnosis, noting only a small change in his bowel habits. Experts emphasize the importance of recognizing even subtle changes and adhering to recommended screening guidelines, which now suggest beginning screenings at age 45.

O’Hara’s death was attributed to a pulmonary embolism following her battle with colorectal cancer. The actress, best known for her role in “Beetlejuice” and more recently “Schitt’s Creek,” had kept her diagnosis private.

The Palm Beach Post is currently running a healthcare series called “Aging in the Golden Years,” focusing on the challenges faced by aging populations and their families. The series aims to address the increasing need for support and preparation as more people reach advanced age.
