Residents of Petone, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand, were advised to remain indoors and close windows Monday morning following the discovery of a gas leak on Bouverie Street.

Emergency services responded to reports of the leak at approximately 11:30 a.m. Local time, according to a statement released by the Wellington District Police on Facebook. Contractors are currently working to repair the leak, resulting in the closure of Bouverie Street between Udy Street and Cuba Street.

“Members of the public in the surrounding area are advised to stay indoors and close any windows,” a police spokesperson said. Traffic updates posted to a local Facebook group confirmed the street closure and echoed the advice to those nearby.
