HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) began repaving Taxiway L at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) Monday afternoon, a project expected to continue through Friday, February 27th. The work, taking place between Gate B-4 and Gate A-16, will necessitate the relocation of most wide-body aircraft at Terminal 1 and the Mauka Terminal during construction hours.
Closures began at 4 p.m. On February 23rd and will recur nightly, concluding at 2 a.m. The following day, with a final closure scheduled for 2 a.m. On February 27th, according to HDOT.
The repaving is anticipated to impact passengers traveling on Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines flights utilizing Airbus 330 or Boeing 787 aircraft. Travelers on these flights should anticipate potential gate changes and allow additional time for travel between terminals, HDOT officials advised.
The Wiki Wiki shuttle service remains available for intra-airport transportation, according to HDOT. Details on the shuttle’s routes and schedules can be found at https://airports.hawaii.gov/hnl/getting-to-from/ground-transportation/intra-airport-transportation/.
The current project follows a series of runway and taxiway improvements at HNL. In July 2025, HDOT announced a Runway and Taxiway Shoulders Rehabilitation Project that included nightly closures of Runway 8R-26L from August 1st through August 20th, 2025, to perform paving and drainage work. Runway 4R was also closed nightly from May 27, 2025, through the first week of June 2025 for shoulder paving. That earlier work was intended to maintain airfield compliance with Federal Aviation Administration standards.
HDOT has not yet released details regarding the scope of the current Taxiway L project beyond the repaving work. The Runway and Taxiway Shoulder Rehabilitation project was scheduled for completion in October 2025, but the status of that overall project is currently unconfirmed.
