South Korean health officials are observing a growing trend of individuals adopting a diet centered around phaehyangbeoseot, commonly known as king oyster mushrooms, spurred by research suggesting its potential benefits for weight management. The trend, dubbed the “king oyster mushroom diet,” has gained traction following a 2023 report by the Korean Society for Obesity, which indicated that the mushroom’s dietary fiber and beta-glucan content may contribute to weight loss.
The king oyster mushroom, a low-calorie food containing approximately 20kcal per 100g, is particularly rich in dietary fiber. This high fiber content promotes a feeling of fullness, potentially reducing overall calorie intake. The mushroom contains chitosan, a substance believed to aid in fat breakdown, according to proponents of the diet. Early anecdotal reports suggest that approximately 80% of individuals who have tried the diet have experienced some degree of weight loss, though rigorous clinical trials are still limited.
Nutritionists emphasize the importance of a balanced diet, even when incorporating low-calorie foods like king oyster mushrooms. While the mushroom offers nutritional benefits, including vitamins B, D, iron, potassium, and calcium, it should not be consumed in isolation. The mushroom’s nutritional profile includes 2.7g of dietary fiber and 400mg of potassium per serving, contributing to overall health and potentially aiding in blood sugar regulation.
The popularity of the diet has led to increased demand for king oyster mushrooms in South Korea, with some retailers reporting supply challenges. The Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has not yet issued any official statements regarding the trend, but is reportedly monitoring the situation to ensure stable supply and quality control.
Research published in 2024 indicated that individuals who consumed king oyster mushrooms daily for six months experienced an average weight loss of 2.8kg more than those who did not, though the study’s methodology and long-term effects are still under investigation. The mushroom’s antioxidant properties may also support mitigate oxidative stress associated with weight loss, according to researchers at Nofat, a Korean health information website.
Despite the growing interest, health experts caution against relying solely on a single food for weight loss. A sustainable and healthy approach to weight management requires a comprehensive lifestyle change, including a balanced diet and regular exercise. The Korean Society for Obesity has scheduled a follow-up review of the research in the fourth quarter of 2026 to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of the king oyster mushroom diet.
