How to Block Someone on Messenger: A Simple Guide

February 22, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Users of Facebook’s Messenger application now have multiple options for managing unwanted contact, including the ability to remove contacts and control who can reach them directly. While a complete logout of the Messenger account isn’t possible, Facebook provides tools to limit interactions and manage privacy within the platform.

Finding and connecting with individuals on Messenger is primarily achieved through the app’s search function, accessible via the “People” icon. Users can search by name or phone number to locate friends and family. The platform also allows connections via QR codes, offering an alternative method for initiating contact. If a user isn’t already connected, a friend request can be sent directly from the profile page.

The process of finding contacts extends to the broader Facebook ecosystem. Users can initiate Messenger conversations directly from within the main Facebook app by selecting the “Messenger” icon. From there, the same search functionality – utilizing names or phone numbers – is available to locate and connect with individuals. If a phone number is associated with a Messenger account, it will appear in the search results, facilitating connection.

Facebook’s Help Center provides guidance on managing active status indicators, allowing users to notice or hide when they are active on Messenger. This feature, alongside contact removal options, gives users greater control over their online presence and interactions within the messaging application. The Help Center also details how to upload contacts to Messenger, though users also have the option to remove existing contacts as needed.
