Search and recovery efforts for the victims of a massive avalanche near Lake Tahoe, California, remain suspended as another winter storm threatens the already treacherous conditions in the Sierra Nevada. The avalanche, which occurred on February 17, 2026, claimed the lives of eight skiers, and one remains missing and presumed dead, officials confirmed Friday.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office stated that “hazardous weather conditions” are preventing crews from reaching the bodies, and recovery efforts are expected to be further delayed into the weekend. Forecasters are predicting more than a foot of new snow, increasing the risk of additional avalanches in the region, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The group of fifteen, comprised of both guides and clients of a mountain guide company, were backcountry skiing in an avalanche-prone area when the slide occurred. Six individuals were rescued in the immediate aftermath. The eight deceased skiers have been identified as Danielle Keatley, Kate Morse, Caroline Sekar, and Kate Vitt, according to family statements released through authorities. The identities of the remaining four victims have not yet been publicly released.

The avalanche, described as “football-field sized,” is the deadliest in California’s recorded history, drawing rescue resources from as far as Los Angeles. Authorities initially left the bodies on the mountainside due to the near-vertical terrain and extreme weather, deeming it too dangerous for first responders to attempt removal.

“Due to the ongoing challenges of the weather, the avalanche conditions, the effort remains ongoing, as well as our search for the remaining skier,” Sheriff Shannan Moon said on February 18.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has noted that this incident represents the deadliest avalanche in the United States in nearly 45 years.

Meanwhile, in Utah, two separate avalanches in the past 24 hours resulted in fatalities. A man was killed in one avalanche, and a girl died in another, according to authorities. Details surrounding the Utah incidents remain limited.

The recovery operation in California remains stalled, awaiting a break in the weather that would allow crews to safely access the avalanche site. Officials have not yet announced a timeline for when recovery efforts might resume.
