The price of gold surged past $4,000 per troy ounce (approximately 31 grams) on Thursday, February 19, 2026, marking a new record high and nearly doubling in value over the past year, according to reports from German media outlet BILD.de. The dramatic increase is creating significant challenges for restoration professionals, as the cost of gilding, including function on picture frames, has also experienced a substantial rise.
Restaurator Wolfgang Zimmermann is already adjusting to the new economic reality. “For us, the price of a single sheet of gold leaf has doubled, but the demand has decreased immensely,” he stated. Gold leaf, used in gilding, is measured in incredibly thin sheets – eight by eight centimeters, with 6,000 sheets equaling just one millimeter in thickness. The amount of gold required to achieve a durable, radiant finish varies depending on the complexity of the object. “For a medium-sized picture frame, if the frame is heavily structured with many decorative elements, a restoration could now cost around 1,500 euros,” Zimmermann explained.
Goldschläger, the artisans who painstakingly hammer gold into these ultra-thin sheets, are passing the increased costs onto their clients. According to Zimmermann, there are few viable alternatives, particularly in the realm of historical preservation and religious art. “You can only repair gold leaf with gold leaf. If there’s a flaw that was previously highly polished gold, I can only fix it with gold leaf. There’s no material that can imitate the color or surface,” he said. Whereas gold imitations, often referred to as “Theatergold” (made of beaten brass), exist, they are unsuitable for exterior applications.
The fluctuating price of gold is forcing restoration businesses to adopt a cautious approach to quoting. Zimmermann noted that proposals, such as those submitted to the Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt, must explicitly state that the gold price is calculated based on the current daily rate. Any subsequent price changes would necessitate a final billing adjustment based on actual costs, a practice that must be transparently communicated to clients. The price of Theatergold, silver, and aluminum are also rising sharply, continuing an upward trend.
German retailer Gallerix.de currently offers gold-colored picture frames in various sizes, including those designed to fit A4 artwork, with prices starting at 17.90 euros. Rahmenversand.de, another German supplier, offers a wide selection of gold frames in wood and plastic, manufactured in Germany. Amazon.de also lists numerous gold picture frames, including A4-sized options.
