British police are contacting former protection officers who worked for King Charles’ younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, following his arrest on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, according to statements released by Thames Valley Police and Buckingham Palace.
The arrest, which took place in Norfolk, prompted a statement from King Charles expressing “deepest concern” and affirming that “the law must take its course.” The King emphasized his support for a “full, fair and proper process” and pledged co-operation with authorities. “It would not be right for me to comment further on this matter,” he added.
Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest of a man in his sixties, and stated that searches were being conducted at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. The police force declined to name the individual, citing national guidance, but confirmed he remains in custody. Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright stated, “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.”
The arrest marks a significant development in scrutiny surrounding Mountbatten-Windsor’s connections to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Police previously indicated they were assessing a complaint regarding the alleged sharing of confidential material with Epstein. Mountbatten-Windsor has previously denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein, and has not publicly commented on the specific allegations of misconduct in public office.
CNN reported that Mountbatten-Windsor has since been released from custody, but remains under investigation. He is the first senior British royal to be arrested in nearly 400 years. The news comes after the release of millions of documents related to Epstein in January, prompting renewed attention to Mountbatten-Windsor’s past associations.
Virginia Giuffre’s family released a statement following the arrest, expressing mixed emotions and noting her absence, as Giuffre died by suicide last year. She had previously accused Mountbatten-Windsor of sexual assault, allegations he has consistently denied.
The arrest occurred as King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other members of the royal family continued with scheduled public duties, according to CNN. The former prince was stripped of his royal titles due to his links with Epstein.
Police have cautioned against publication that could prejudice the ongoing investigation, reminding the public of potential contempt of court issues. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not provided a timeline for its completion.
