A Spanish television program has challenged the widely held belief that drinking water with lemon possesses detoxifying properties, with a nutritionist citing potential dental enamel erosion as a risk of excessive consumption. The debate, featured on La Sexta’s “Sábado Clave,” centered on claims made by a pharmacist regarding the benefits of daily lemon water intake.
The pharmacist, in a video segment aired on the program, asserted that lemon water could aid weight loss by increasing insulin sensitivity, offer anti-aging effects, and improve cholesterol levels. These claims prompted a response from nutritionist Verónica Chazín, who appeared on the program via telephone.
Chazín dismissed the notion of lemon water as a detoxifying agent, stating, “I’ve been hearing for years that drinking lemon water on an empty stomach aids weight loss. I believe this is a myth that will be difficult to dispel. Lemon water simply hydrates you, and the lemon flavor may craft it more palatable.”
She further explained that the human body is equipped with its own detoxification systems – the liver and kidneys – and that relying on external “detox” aids is unnecessary and potentially misguided. According to the World Health Organization, a healthy diet is “a factor of risk critical of illnesses and disability,” and helps protect against malnutrition and non-transmissible diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular issues.
Chazín also cautioned against the potential negative effects of frequent lemon water consumption, specifically the risk of dental enamel erosion due to the acidity of lemons. “Lemon water can help you lose enamel if you abuse it as of the acid in the lemon,” she warned. The Mayo Clinic notes that a healthy diet should include a variety of foods, and that consuming nutrient-rich foods regularly is linked to a lower risk of chronic diseases.
The discussion highlights a broader trend of unsubstantiated health claims circulating in popular media. While adequate hydration is widely recognized as crucial for overall health – as emphasized by MedlinePlus – the specific benefits attributed to lemon water remain unsupported by scientific evidence. The Mexican government’s health portal, gob.mx, states that a healthy diet is essential for maintaining great health, aiding recovery, fighting infections, and preventing chronic diseases caused by obesity.
