KRC Genk Advances in Europa League: News & Results

Nicky Hayen has officially begun his tenure as head coach of KRC Genk, taking over from Thorsten Fink, the club announced Monday evening. The appointment follows a period of speculation after Hayen’s departure from Club Brugge and Genk’s require for a new sporting leader.

Hayen, who signed an open-ended contract with the Limburg-based club, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity. “KRC Genk is an ambitious club — that was clear from the exceptionally first conversations over the past few days. I’m really looking forward to meeting the squad and I’m extremely motivated to achieve great things together with this club,” he stated, according to the club’s official website.

The move to Genk represents a significant step for Hayen, who has built a reputation for delivering results both domestically and on the European stage, even as demonstrating tactical flexibility and a commitment to developing young talent. Despite attracting interest from other international clubs, Hayen “made a clear and conscious choice to commit to the sporting project of KRC Genk,” the club stated.

Stef Wijnants, a commentator and analyst familiar with KRC Genk, noted that the pursuit of Hayen began shortly after Fink’s dismissal. “The transfer was already simmering since the dismissal of Thorsten Fink,” Wijnants said. “Hayen always was the number one candidate. He convinced Genk from the beginning that he was the right man.”

Genk currently aims to secure European qualification via the Champions’ Play-offs domestically and progress from the Europa League league phase on the continental stage. Hayen will lead his first training session on Wednesday and will make his dugout debut on Friday.

The appointment also carries a symbolic weight, as evidenced by the warm welcome Hayen received from Genk legend Branko Strupar, who embraced the new coach. Strupar joined Genk in 1994 and played a key role in the club’s rise, winning promotion to the Belgian First Division in 1996 and the Belgian championship in 1999. He was also named Belgian Golden Shoe winner in 1998.

Recent successes for Genk include a significant victory against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League, bolstering their chances of reaching the knockout stages. The club also secured a strong position following a match featuring a notable performance by El Ouahdi.
