2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV: 93 Miles Range & New GR Sport Trim Revealed

Toyota has unveiled a significantly upgraded version of its RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), boasting a 58% increase in all-electric range to approximately 150 km (93 miles). The revamped PHEV, launched Thursday in Japan, features a fresh large-capacity battery and silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors, aiming for what Toyota calls “world-leading energy efficiency.”

The increased range, up from the previous 95 km (59 miles), positions the RAV4 PHEV as a more competitive option in the growing plug-in SUV market. While still trailing the range offered by many fully electric vehicles, Toyota asserts the new range is sufficient for typical daily commutes.

Beyond range, the new RAV4 PHEV delivers a maximum output of 242 kW (329 PS/324 hp). Toyota also highlights the vehicle’s ability to function as a mobile power source, equipped with a 100V external power socket capable of delivering up to 1,500W. The company claims the vehicle can provide electricity for roughly a week under a 400W load using its Power Supply Time Priority Mode.

A new GR Sport trim level has also been introduced, featuring redesigned front and rear bumpers, a lowered suspension and GR Performance Dampers. This performance-oriented trim aims to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and handling characteristics of the RAV4 PHEV.

Pricing for the new RAV4 PHEV starts at 6 million yen ($38,700 USD), with the GR Sport trim available for 6.3 million yen ($40,700 USD). The vehicle will launch in Japan on March 9, 2026, following the release of a hybrid RAV4 model in December 2025.

Toyota plans to expand availability of the new RAV4 PHEV to Europe and the United States this spring. The addition of the upgraded PHEV expands Toyota’s electrified vehicle lineup in the US, which currently includes four all-electric SUVs, including the Highlander EV scheduled for release later this year. Toyota recently upgraded its first electric SUV, the bZ, and launched the smaller C-HR and off-road bZ Woodland EVs, both slated for dealerships in March.

The RAV4’s strong sales performance in 2025, surpassing even the Tesla Model Y to become the world’s best-selling vehicle, underscores its continued popularity and Toyota’s success in the SUV segment.
