by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Financial markets in Taiwan are closed today, February 20, 2026, due to the Lunar New Year holiday, also known as the Spring Festival. The closure aligns with similar observances in mainland China, impacting regional trading activity.

The Lunar New Year is the most significant traditional holiday in Chinese culture, and its observance extends beyond mainland China to include Taiwan and other regions with substantial Chinese populations. The duration of the holiday period varies, but typically involves a week of public holidays and widespread business closures.

In Taiwan, the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday period officially runs from February 14th to February 22nd, encompassing nine days of public holidays. This extended break allows for family reunions and traditional celebrations. The holiday period also presents an opportunity for travel, with many Taiwanese citizens taking advantage of the time off to visit family abroad or explore domestic tourist destinations. According to recent reports, January and February represent an optimal time to visit Taiwan, with mild weather averaging between 15-20°C.

The closure of financial markets in Taiwan and mainland China coincides with the observance of the New Year in both regions. Japan’s consumer price index data for January was also released today, February 20th, adding to the economic data flow amidst the regional holiday closures.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) observes a public holiday for the Founding Day of the Republic of China on January 1st, a single day of closure. The extended Lunar New Year holiday, however, represents the longest period of official public holidays in Taiwan.
