Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Doha Open on Wednesday, defeating Valentin Royer in straight sets. The match, held at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex, saw Alcaraz overcome a second-set challenge to secure his place in the next round.
The world number two initially appeared to be in control, but Royer elevated his game in the second set, creating a tense moment for the Spanish star. Alcaraz admitted post-match that he briefly feared a third set, acknowledging the difficulty of maintaining momentum against a determined opponent. He ultimately rallied, regaining his composure and closing out the match.
“I was a little bit afraid to go to the third set,” Alcaraz said, according to Tennis Temple. “But I played some great shots and I was able to close it out.”
Alcaraz will now face Khachanov in the quarterfinals. The match presents a significant test as he continues his campaign in Doha. The ATP Tour reports that Alcaraz is seeking to build on this victory as he prepares for the upcoming hard-court season.
