AirPods Pro 3: Cameras, AI Features & Potential Second High-End Model Revealed

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Apple is planning a higher-end version of the AirPods Pro 3, equipped with infrared (IR) cameras, according to reports. The addition of cameras aims to enhance the product’s artificial intelligence capabilities and introduce new features, building on the recently released AirPods Pro 3 launched in September 2025.

The initial AirPods Pro 3 release, lauded for its improved audio quality and Active Noise Cancellation, removes up to twice as much noise compared to the previous generation and four times more than the original AirPods Pro, according to Apple. The new design also provides greater in-ear stability and includes heart rate sensing during workouts, integrated with the Fitness app on iPhone.

Industry analyst Mark Gurman has reported that the external cameras, combined with artificial intelligence, will allow the AirPods to “understand the outside world and provide information.” Gurman specifically highlighted “Visual Intelligence” as a core function of the camera-equipped AirPods. This suggests a potential for features that leverage real-time visual data, though specific applications remain undisclosed.

Further details from leaker Instant Digital suggest the higher-end model may replace the pressure-sensitive buttons on the ear stems with support for hand gestures. Apple may also choose to support both control methods simultaneously, potentially addressing concerns about usability given the increasing number of features accessible through the stem controls.

The camera-equipped AirPods Pro 3 are expected to largely mirror the specifications of the current model, but will be offered at a higher price point. This strategy mirrors Apple’s approach with the standard AirPods 4, which are available with and without Active Noise Cancellation. The company appears to be planning a tiered offering for the AirPods Pro 3 line, catering to different user needs, and budgets.

Apple began accepting pre-orders for the standard AirPods Pro 3 in September 2025, with availability beginning on September 19th. The company has not yet announced a release date or pricing for the camera-equipped version.
