France Far-Right Activist Killing: Arrests & Rising Tensions

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Eleven people are in custody in France following the death of a 23-year-old far-right student activist, Quentin Deranque, who sustained a fatal brain injury after being attacked during a protest in Lyon last week. The arrests, which began Wednesday, include two parliamentary aides linked to the hard-left party La France Insoumise (LFI), escalating political tensions ahead of upcoming municipal elections.

Deranque was attacked on the sidelines of a conference held by Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament for LFI. Authorities are investigating seven of those detained for murder and four others for allegedly helping suspects evade police, according to prosecutors.

Raphaël Arnault, an LFI politician, confirmed that one of his parliamentary aides, Jacques-Elie Favrot, had his contract terminated after admitting to being at the scene and engaging in violence, though Favrot’s lawyer stated his client did not inflict the fatal blows. A second aide has had their parliamentary rights suspended.

The arrests have prompted calls for LFI to suspend Arnault from its parliamentary group, due to his connections with the Anti-Fascist Young Guard, a group authorities have implicated in the violence. Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon has publicly urged the party to take action.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of LFI, has attempted to distance the party from the incident. Still, the party faces increasing scrutiny less than a month before the municipal elections, which are viewed as a key test of public opinion before the 2027 presidential elections.

La France Insoumise, founded in 2016 by Mélenchon, identifies as a left-wing to far-left political party. It currently holds 71 seats in the National Assembly and 9 seats in the European Parliament. The party is affiliated with the European Left Alliance for the People and the Planet, now known as Now the People!

The incident has also led to a bomb threat targeting the offices of Rima Hassan in Lyon, further heightening the volatile political climate. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released further details regarding the alleged motives behind the attack.
