Apple CarPlay to Get AI Chatbot Support: ChatGPT, Gemini & More Coming Soon

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Apple is preparing to significantly expand the functionality of CarPlay with the upcoming iOS 26.4 update, allowing drivers to access third-party AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Claude directly through their vehicle’s infotainment system. The change, first detailed in Apple’s CarPlay Developer Guide, marks the first time the company has permitted voice-based conversational AI apps within CarPlay.

The move comes as Apple seeks to balance enhanced in-car experiences with driver safety. Historically, Apple has tightly controlled which apps are permitted on CarPlay, prioritizing those focused on navigation, communication, and audio playback. This limitation stemmed from concerns about driver distraction. According to the developer guide, apps integrating with CarPlay will need to add support for a new voice control screen designed to provide visual feedback during voice-based interactions.

While the integration will offer hands-free access to powerful AI tools, Apple is implementing several restrictions. Drivers will not be able to activate the chatbots using a wake word, requiring them to manually launch the app before initiating a conversation. The apps will be limited in their functionality; they will not be able to control vehicle functions or interact with the iPhone directly. Responses from the AI will also be restricted to voice output, prohibiting the display of text or images, a measure intended to minimize visual distraction while driving.

The update, currently in beta, is expected to be released this spring. Developers of AI chatbots, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, will need to update their applications to comply with Apple’s requirements and add CarPlay support. Apple’s decision to open CarPlay to these AI services follows reports earlier this month from Bloomberg outlining the company’s plans for voice-based AI integration.

Apple’s CarPlay Developer Guide specifies that “voice-based conversational apps must have a primary modality of voice upon launch; and after launch, appropriately respond to questions or requests and perform actions.” The company emphasizes the need for these apps to “optimize for voice interaction in the driving environment.”

Despite the new capabilities, Siri will remain a core component of the CarPlay experience. Apple has made clear that the new AI integrations will not replace Siri’s existing functionality. The addition of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude represents an expansion of options for drivers, rather than a replacement of Apple’s native voice assistant.

Apple has not yet commented on the specific timeline for the public release of iOS 26.4, nor has it detailed the approval process for AI chatbot applications seeking CarPlay integration. The company’s silence on these details leaves developers awaiting further guidance as they prepare to adapt their services for the in-car environment.
