Witcher 3: New Major Expansion in Development? – Rumors & Leaks

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Reports indicate that CD Projekt Red is planning a significant expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, developed not by the studio itself, but by Fool’s Theory – the team currently undertaking the remake of the original Witcher game. The information, initially shared by Polish journalist “UV” during a live broadcast, suggests the expansion will serve as a narrative bridge between The Witcher 3 and the forthcoming Witcher 4.

According to UV’s reporting, the project will involve a team of approximately 100 developers, signaling an undertaking comparable in scope to the critically acclaimed “Hearts of Stone” and “Blood and Wine” expansions. This scale contrasts with smaller updates and suggests a substantial addition to the game’s content.

The potential expansion is rumored to introduce a new, mythical land – frequently speculated to be Zerrikannia – and may center on the character of Ciri. This focus on Ciri aligns with expectations for Witcher 4, which is anticipated to begin a new chapter in the franchise’s narrative. Fool’s Theory’s involvement is seen as a strategic move, providing valuable experience before tackling the full remake of the first Witcher title.

UV also reported that CD Projekt Red responded negatively to Borys, a Polish individual credited with initially publicizing the information about the third expansion. This reaction has further fueled speculation about the project’s existence.

The creatures known as Ogars of the Wild Hunt, frequently encountered alongside the Red Riders, are described as beings formed from magically bound ice crystals. They attack relentlessly, utilizing claws and teeth to overwhelm their prey, and become particularly dangerous when wounded. According to lore, these creatures are vulnerable to the Igni sign and may be temporarily subdued with Axii. Their strength is amplified during cold weather and under a red moon, a harbinger of the Wild Hunt’s arrival.

As of today, CD Projekt Red has not officially commented on the reported expansion, and the project remains unconfirmed.
