Sakhir GP: Technical Challenges & Low Grip Explained | F1 2023

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Teams encountered challenging track conditions during the first day of Formula 1 preseason testing at the Bahrain International Circuit on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. Drivers reported a lack of grip, impacting lap times and testing programs, according to reports from The Athletic.

The Bahrain International Circuit, which first hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2004, is known for its desert location and unique track layouts. The circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke and constructed rapidly, utilizing specialized asphalt imported from Shropshire, UK, to withstand the harsh desert environment. The track has since grow a regular fixture on the F1 calendar, consistently delivering “a spectacle under the desert night sky,” as described by BahrainGP.com.

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari initially set the pace in the early running, achieving a best lap time of 1:33.739. Later in the day, George Russell of Mercedes improved upon that time, recording a 1:33.459. Carlos Sainz Jr. And Lewis Hamilton, driving for Williams and Ferrari respectively, both completed a number of laps equal to their respective race numbers – 55 and 44 – a detail noted by The Athletic.

Audi demonstrated strong performance in terms of total mileage completed on Wednesday, surpassing Mercedes. However, Aston Martin, Cadillac and Red Bull experienced lower lap counts. The testing is crucial for all 11 teams as they prepare for the 2026 season, which will begin with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 6th, with free practice scheduled for March 6th.

The Bahrain International Circuit also hosts other motorsport events, including the WEC 8 Hours of Bahrain, part of the FIA World Endurance Championship. The circuit offers various experiences, including circuit tours and off-road adventures. The 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix tickets are currently available at Early Bird prices.

Testing will continue through Friday, February 20th, with teams aiming to maximize track time before the season opener. No further details regarding the grip issues were immediately available.
