Adani $100B Data Center Expansion: Indian Giant Doubles Pipeline

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Indian conglomerate Adani Group has committed $100 billion to establish a network of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers across India over the next decade, signaling a major push to capitalize on the country’s growing digital economy and emerging AI capabilities.

The investment, announced this week, will focus on developing large-scale data center infrastructure to support the increasing demands of AI computing, according to statements released by the company. Adani Group intends to leverage renewable energy sources to power these facilities, aligning with India’s sustainability goals. The company plans to begin construction on the first of these data centers within the next year, with a phased rollout across key Indian cities.

This substantial investment comes as India aims to position itself as a global hub for AI and data processing. The country’s large talent pool, coupled with relatively lower costs compared to established markets like the United States and Europe, are seen as key advantages. The Adani Group’s move is expected to attract further investment in the sector and accelerate the development of India’s AI ecosystem.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the investment will be executed by 2035. The scale of the project is unprecedented for an Indian company and reflects a broader trend of increasing investment in data infrastructure globally, driven by the rapid growth of AI applications. The Adani Group’s existing infrastructure portfolio, including ports, energy, and logistics, is expected to provide synergies and logistical advantages for the data center business.

Reuters reported that the data centers are intended to power India’s AI ambitions. CNBC noted that the investment is a significant bet on the future of AI in India, and could help to create recent jobs and economic opportunities. Network World highlighted that the project is part of a larger effort by India to become a global technology leader.

The Adani Group has not yet disclosed specific locations for all of the planned data centers, but has indicated a preference for sites with access to reliable power, and connectivity. The company is currently evaluating potential partnerships with technology providers and cloud service providers to accelerate the deployment of the infrastructure.
