Trump Pledges Hungary Financial Aid, Highlights Close Ties

Slovakia and Hungary received assurances from a top U.S. Diplomat that the administration of Donald Trump would be prepared to offer financial assistance should either country encounter economic difficulties, according to remarks delivered during a visit to Hungary on February 16, 2026.

Speaking to Hungarian officials, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio stated that President Trump’s commitment to Hungary’s success was “deeply committed,” and linked that support to a strong personal relationship between the two leaders. “We are entering this golden era of relations between our countries and not simply because of the alignment of our people. But because of the relationship that you have with the President of the United States,” Rubio said. He further indicated that the President would be attentive to any impediments to Hungary’s growth or threats to its stability, suggesting a willingness to intervene financially if necessary.

Rubio’s visit, which began on Sunday and included a stop in Slovakia, is intended to strengthen ties with leaders in Eastern Europe who are seen as aligned with Trump’s political positions. The pledge of potential financial support comes as Hungary, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, faces ongoing scrutiny from within the European Union regarding rule of law concerns and democratic backsliding.

David B. Cornstein, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Hungary from 2018 to 2020 under the Trump administration, was a vocal defender of Orbán’s government during his tenure. Cornstein, a businessman with a background in gambling, jewelry and telemarketing, was nominated to the post by Trump. His appointment signaled a shift in U.S. Policy toward Hungary, moving away from previous administrations’ criticisms of Orbán’s policies.

The offer of assistance from the Trump administration, conveyed through Senator Rubio, underscores the continued importance of Hungary to U.S. Strategic interests in Central Europe. Rubio emphasized that Hungary’s success was directly linked to U.S. Success in the region, framing the relationship as “essential and vital for our national interests in the years to come.”

As of February 17, 2026, the Hungarian government has not publicly responded to Rubio’s offer of potential financial support. Senator Rubio is scheduled to continue his tour of Eastern European nations, with further diplomatic engagements planned in the coming days.
