Insomniac Games, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Spider-Man series, has stated that a release of its games on Xbox consoles is “not likely.” The statement, delivered via the studio’s official social media account on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, came in response to a fan inquiry about the possibility of bringing the popular franchise to Microsoft’s Xbox platform.
The response arrives amid a shifting strategy from Sony, Insomniac’s parent company, regarding platform exclusivity. Previously, in a 2017 tweet, Insomniac declared that Marvel’s Spider-Man “will never appear on Xbox or PC” and was a “permanent PS4 exclusive published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.” However, that prediction proved inaccurate, as the game was later released on PC in January 2025.
Sony has recently demonstrated a greater willingness to release titles on competing platforms. Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2, a record-breaking success, launched on Xbox Series X and S, including a crossover with the Halo franchise. Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, is also slated for release on Xbox, PC and PlayStation. This move signaled a potential softening of Sony’s traditionally staunch defense of platform exclusivity.
Despite these changes, Insomniac’s statement suggests that the Spider-Man franchise will remain a PlayStation exclusive. The developer’s response indicates a stronger commitment to maintaining the series’ association with the PlayStation ecosystem. Insomniac’s next release, Marvel’s Wolverine, is also confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, scheduled for release later this year.
Fans are anticipating a continuation of the Spider-Man narrative following the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC. Voice actor Yuri Lowenthal has hinted that a potential Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 will continue to feature Peter Parker as the central protagonist, regardless of the conclusion of Spider-Man 2’s storyline.
Sony’s approach contrasts sharply with Microsoft’s strategy of embracing multiplatform releases for its first-party games. Microsoft surprised the industry by announcing that Forza Horizon 6, developed by Playground Games, will launch on PlayStation 5 alongside its Xbox and PC releases. In October 2025, Microsoft stated that the concept of exclusive games locked to a single storefront had become “archaic for most people.”
However, Sony remains hesitant to release its major single-player titles on other platforms on day one, with Ghost of Yotei from Sucker Punch cited as a recent example. Multiplayer games, conversely, are more frequently released simultaneously on PC, such as the cooperative action game Horizon Hunters Gathering from Guerrilla, which will be available on both PS5 and PC. The simultaneous multiplatform launch of Marathon represents a notable exception to Sony’s broader strategy.
