15 Black Romance Movies to Fall in Love With This Valentine’s Day

February 14th offered a chance to explore the evolving landscape of Black romance on film, with a selection of movies showcasing love stories centered on Black leads and casts. From classic titles like “Love Jones” to more recent releases such as “Rye Lane,” the genre reflects generational shifts in representation and storytelling.

The appeal of these films extends beyond romantic narratives, often featuring prominent figures from music and entertainment. Queen Latifah, for example, stars in both “Just Wright” and “Last Holiday,” demonstrating her versatility in the genre. LL COOL J appears alongside her in “Last Holiday,” while Hip Hop artists like Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) have made cameos in films like “Brown Sugar.”

“The Photograph,” starring LaKeith Stanfield and Issa Rae, offers a dual-timeline romantic drama, exploring connections between the present and the past through a collection of letters. Conversely, “Queen & Slim,” featuring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith, presents a more action-driven story of a couple on the run after a tragic incident.

Several films delve into the complexities of relationships, such as “Think Like a Man,” which follows multiple couples navigating love and commitment using advice from Steve Harvey’s book. “About Last Night” explores the ups and downs of a relationship between Danny, played by Michael Ealy and Debbie, portrayed by Joy Bryant, alongside the comedic interference of Kevin Hart and Regina Hall.

Biographical narratives also find a place within the genre, with “South Side With You” offering a glimpse into the first date between Michelle and Barack Obama, played by Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers, respectively. Amazon Prime’s “Relationship Goals,” starring Kelly Rowland and Method Man, presents a workplace romance with competitive undertones, inspired by Michael Todd’s relationship advice.

“Love & Basketball,” starring Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps, remains a beloved classic, chronicling the intertwined lives of two childhood friends with a shared passion for the sport. “Sylvie’s Love,” set in 1957 New York, features Tessa Thompson in a story of love and longing amidst societal constraints. “The Best Man,” centers on a group of friends whose lives are disrupted by the revelations in a manuscript written by one of their own, Taye Diggs, and explores themes of loyalty and betrayal.

More recent additions to the genre include “The Perfect Find,” a Netflix rom-com starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers, and “Rye Lane,” a British film earning acclaim for its leads, David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah. The latter earned Oparah a BIFA Award for Breakthrough Performance.
