The Novel York Mets’ playoff hopes hang in the balance as the final week of the regular season unfolds, with recent acquisitions failing to deliver the expected impact. Despite bolstering their roster with key trades before the deadline, the team finds itself battling for a National League Wild Card spot, a position increasingly threatened by the Cincinnati Reds.
Pitcher Ryan Helsley and outfielder Cedric Mullins arrived in New York with considerable expectations, joining Tyler Rogers as newcomers intended to fortify the team for a postseason push. However, both players have struggled to replicate their previous form since joining the Mets. Helsley, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals, has posted an 8.47 ERA over his first 17 innings, surrendering four home runs – a stark contrast to his 3.00 ERA and four home runs allowed in 36 innings with St. Louis prior to the trade. According to data analysis, Helsley currently ranks in the 21st percentile in Pitching Run Value and the second percentile in Fastball Run Value.
Mullins, brought in from the Baltimore Orioles, has also underperformed. In 40 games with the Mets, he has managed only two home runs and is batting with a .577 OPS. The Mets had hoped Mullins would recapture the form that saw him hit 30 home runs in 2021, but he has yet to demonstrate that level of production. He has recently been placed in the ninth spot in the batting order, in an attempt to turn the lineup over to key hitters like Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso.
Manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged the team’s improvements following the trades, stating the Mets were “a lot better” after acquiring Helsley, Rogers, and Mullins. Helsley’s debut on August 1st featured a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts, offering a glimpse of potential. However, consistent performance has remained elusive.
The Mets’ struggles come at a critical juncture, with the team recently dropping a series to the Washington Nationals and falling behind the Reds in the Wild Card standings. Veteran pitcher Sean Manaea is also being counted on to step up during the final week of the season. The team’s ability to secure a playoff berth now hinges on the collective performance of these key players, particularly Mullins and Helsley, who have roughly a week to demonstrate their value.
Edwin Diaz, the team’s closer, will need support from the bullpen, including Helsley, to secure late-game leads. The Mets are currently awaiting further developments as they navigate the final stretch of the season.
